
Robyn Penn
Robyn Penn is a South African-New Zealander who has spent much of her artistic career living in South Africa. In 2020 Penn returned to Aotearoa and settled in Tamāki Makaurau, where she works as an artist and art educator. Her practice includes drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and film installations. The foci of her work are of the natural world, the elusive nature of time, the sublime and the threat of the Anthropocene. The artist spent one year training in Fine Arts at the University of the Witswatersrand, Johannesburg before receiving an Honours degree in Fine Arts from Ilam, Canterbury University. She also read for a BA in Psychology at the University of the Witswatersrand. Penn is a fellow of the prestigious Ampersand Trust. Her art has been seen internationally in galleries, in solo and group exhibitions, and art fairs since 1999 and is represented in collections in New Zealand, USA, Europe and South Africa. Her first solo exhibition was in Johannesburg in 2009. Her first solo exhibition in New Zealand will open at Depot Artspace in March 2023. She has been a finalist and recipient of numerous awards; most recently Penn was a merit award winner in the esteemed Parkin Drawing Award 2022. Penn has collaborated with internationally acclaimed master printmakers Mark Attwood (SA), Jillian Ross (CA), Nathi Ndlandla (SA), Georgina Berens (SA), Sara-Aimee Verity (SA), screen printmakers Wim Legrand (BE/SA) and Mia Penn (NL) and Risograph printmaker Candice Ježek (SA).
