The Cuba Press
The Cuba Press is an independent publisher based in Wellington, Aotearoa New Zealand, established in 2018. We publish fiction, non-fiction (including memoir) and poetry. In 2019 we launched our Ahoy! imprint, which focuses on young adult and children's fiction.
Our skills have been honed at two Wellington publishers — Sarah and Roger at Steele Roberts Aotearoa, and Mary and Paul at Mākaro Press. We’d worked side by side since 2013, sharing the same rooms in 75 Ghuznee Street, so we knew how we worked and what our individual strengths were. When we got the opportunity to bring our skills together in a new, independent venture, we took it.
Both Steele Roberts Aotearoa and Mākaro Press have emphasised New Zealand voices in literary fiction, poetry and memoir, with Steele Roberts Aotearoa also building a strong award-winning reputation as a publisher of history, biography and the arts, and Mākaro winning awards with their children’s books, and most recently their novel Auē by Becky Manawatu received the Jann Medlicott Acorn Prize for Fiction. They will continue under their own steam, producing a limited number of books per year.
