Graham Judd
The man behind this project is journeyman printer Graham Judd, living in Birkenhead, Auckland.
Graham trained as a letterpress machinist at the Masterton Printing Company in the late 1960s, retraining on offset as letterpress was phased out, later moving to Auckland to finally set up a small commercial print shop with offset and digital presses. In the 1990s, he got a hankering for his letterpress roots, eventually purchasing a Heidelberg platen. Since then, he has been busy with letterpress printing at GTO Printers and making trips locally and overseas, teaching letterpress, with an emphasis on Heidelberg platen presses. Graham is passionate about letterpress and enjoys sharing his knowledge with others.
Graham has been holding beginners letterpress workshops in Auckland for the past 8 years, using his collection of wood and lead type, small table top presses, and ink and furniture. There have been, and are opportunities to take small presses to events, demonstrating the letterpress process, and educating folk with a hands on experience. The Birkenhead workshops have been very popular with adults, and for the past two years the local Birkenhead Public library has allowed Graham to keep his Albion press there, and run workshops in conjunction with their own programmes. When he can make it, Graham is a volunteer in the Printshop at MOTAT.
