Ura Tabu was first established in Tāmaki Makaurau, Aotearoa in August 2008. The collective is made up of a diverse range of Indigenous dance practitioners from across the Pacific who are dedicated to celebrating and evolving ancestral movement practices. The name Ura Tabu is derived from Ura: to siva, to hula, to dance; and Tabu: tapu, kapu—sacred, sometimes forbidden, other times taboo. Originally founded as a response to reignite the sacredness of Pacific dance, Ura Tabu also set out to challenge outdated taboos that limit the potential of wāhine—not only in dance, but in society as a whole. Today, the collective stands strong in a globalised age, empowered by self-love, courage, resilience, and cultural awareness. Through performances, workshops, community activations, and cross-cultural collaborations, Ura Tabu has become a leading voice in Pacific dance. We actively engage in holistic and innovative approaches that honour our roots, uplift wāhine, and connect communities across Te Moana nui a Kiwa and beyond.
