This month, Simon Bowden has been Executive Director of the Arts Foundation for thirteen years, and he still loves it. He thinks he might even be addicted to fundraising for the arts.

Back in 2002 the Arts Foundation awarded five artists $30,000 each. Warwick Freeman, Shona McCullagh, Don McGlashan, Helen Medlyn and Jacob Rajan. Last year, the Foundation presented five Laureate Awards of $50,000 each, three New Generation Awards of $25,000, the Harriet Friedlander New York Residency worth $80,000, and four $10,000 Award for Patronage donations.

Simon says, "Every year the stories of artist achievement I hear at award selection meetings get richer. This reminds me that there is a real need for the support that our Patrons give to artists . Every year the need grows because the opportunity is growing. We have extraordinary potential in the arts and the Awards funded by Arts Foundation Patrons elevate and inspire this potential towards a richer New Zealand."
