The 2019 Tauranga Arts Festival celebrates the beautiful diversity of Aotearoa New Zealand in everything from theatre to community dance. Leading the way are the Samoan-Kiwi experiences of Wild Dogs Under my Skirt and Still Life with Chickens, the migrant story of The South Afreakins and compelling prison drama Cellfish. Speakers include women’s rights campaigner and former MP Marilyn Waring, Rocky Horror creator Richard O’Brien, Green MP Chlöe Swarbrick, and Sri Lanka-born, New Zealand-raised novelist Brannavan Gnangalingam. Māori-indigenous Australian choreographer Amrita Hepi plans to capture the character of both the Tauranga Moana landscape and its people in free conversation and dance sessions, while the best of New Zealand and international music – including Nadia Reid and Milly Tabak and The Miltones – fills the travelling Carrus Crystal Palace venue.
