1. She is one of New Zealand’s most prominent and celebrated Māori fiction authors and a figurehead of modern New Zealand literature. In 1975 she published the first ever story collection by a Māori woman writer.

2. In 2001, she was longlisted for the Booker Prize (the leading literary award in the English speaking world) with Dogside Story, which also won the 2001 Kiriyama Pacific Rim Fiction Prize.

3. In 2021, one of her notable books was turned into a major film with a powerhouse cast – including Rachel House and Ana Scotney (also Arts Foundation Awarded artists!).
