The Project

On March 30th I returned home from photographing every single square kilometre around the entire world.

But if you already know me, this won't surprise you.

I have a track record of internationally recognised media, bring communities together with grassroots art projects and a typically un-Kiwi motivation to put myself out there.

I believe in myself and these ideas but today I humbly ask you for your help.

If you believe in me too or maybe have just enjoyed some of my projects, please consider contributing to my latest endeavour, "Kiwi Food" my first feature film.

I plan to shoot this in the coming months with a 78 page script I've already written and including the World's first visual circumnavigation that I've just shot.

I am a product of the internet's creative wild west but I see my creativity as more worthwhile, I hope you see me that way and are willing to invest into that potential!

The Team

This project is spearheaded by myself, Caleb Jack Williams, as writer/director.

I am a content producer and editor, working alongside organisations such as Uber, Vatican Press Office, World Vision Australia, Mid-Day Squares and have formerly created content online, best known for my documentary work but also alongside animation, social experiments and scripted episodic content. As well as co-founding the Pickle Pot Be-In Day Music Festival which ran until 2023 attracting 1000s of youth to the sunshine Kāpiti Coast.

"Kiwi Food" has advanced through the pre-production process, which saw myself photograph the World's First Visual Circumnavigation, an important visual component of the film. This was filmed in co-operation with Amtrak, Eurostar, Interrail, RZD and Japan Railways.

A 78 paged final draft has was completed on April 9th, solely written by myself but closely supervised by a small team.

The process of writing and filming has also been documented and shared online to an instagram page, "@makinamovie", to an audience reaching 24k (data based on past 30 days). The goal of this is to involve other independent creatives with the process and generate interest in the film.

The Funding

Attached is a brief budget outline for production, aiming to take place over a 6 day period. Not included is post-production expenses and below the line expenses, however these will be detailed for contributors.

The Details

“Kiwi Food”, is the name of my first feature film.

Being asked while overseas, “what is traditional New Zealand food?”, always encapsulated my cultural insecurities.

I don’t really know what it is and it made me reflect I don’t really understand what my cultural inheritance is.

So I lived in my ancestral country but I didn’t feel Dutch.

And I continued to escape Aotearoa more times than I can count but I’ve always come back.

That is because I have come to believe in this context that I’ve been born into.

But I worry, we as a country are losing that self belief.

And in amongst this angsty cultural anxiety, I have written my first feature film script to digest this.

"Kiwi Food", is set in Aotearoa in the near future, when the world is interconnected by a Global Rail System.

It follows Phileas who feeling this rejection, like many Kiwis today, runs away leaving everything behind.

But in exploring the places he read about in school, instead of feeling a sense of connection, it just contributes to his confusion of what side of the globe he belongs on.

So ultimately, the story is about what pulls us back and why we should look towards a future here.

Having lived this story I have written, meeting so many Kiwi runaways in Melbourne and expats in London, instead I feel convicted to envision a hopeful, 'New-New Zealand' identity.

If these ideas resonate with you, I humbly ask you contribute to the project.

The Impact

Kiwi Food exists to change the narrative of Aotearoa's "youth exodus", we are all sick to death of those news stories and I want to contribute to a new hopeful vision.

It will be the first film to give an audience the opportunity to visually experience each step of a journey around the world, a ground breaking feat for another New Zealand film.

I have the ability and experience leading these projects that will encourage the next generation of Kiwi creatives, my team, on their own terms.

It will also be my first time crowdfunding a project, I have created visual art seen by 1m+ and organised events bringing together 1000s of locals but never asked for a cent, now I am humbly offering an opportunity for investment into my own creative abilities.
