Born and bred at New Zealand's Splore Festival, 'Devour' is my 10th Cabaret to storm the stage, in a legendary series that have enthralled huge audiences every year. With great excitement I've decided more of the world should experience the wild ride of these shows! I'm taking a condensed (more insane skills and storyline, packed into 60 mins) version of 'Devour' to Adelaide in March 2025! Prior to 14 shows at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, 'Devour' will run for 3 nights in Aotea Square's Herald Theatre. This is a huge solo endeavour and I need help to fund the fun!
The Team
A full-time professional circus aerialist in Europe, I then toured with an Australian circus in NZ and settled here in 2005. I write and produce ground-breaking cabarets, but also site-specific performances, including ballet in a skate park, in a river, acrobats on a wall and dancers on a floating marina!
My incredible cast include the Muay Thai expert, award-winning pole dancer contortionist Miss Hellblazer, world-class aerialist Rochelle Mangan, two sword-fighters , two jaw-dropping parkour acrobats, legendary MC Lizzie Tollemache, and a guy who juggles a chainsaw -and stands on her head while she lies on broken glass.
The Funding
This is quite an undertaking! As a solo producer, this is all on me. Without funding support so far from sponsors or Creative New Zealand, I am looking to raise funds from the wider community; those of you who have supported my work as audience, who love the artform of circus and cabaret, and those who want to see New Zealand performers and performance succeed and thrive, in this tricky environment of funding cuts and costs increases.
The money raised will go towards
- Rehearsals
- Wages
- Props & costumes
- Travel/Flights
- Accomodation
- Marketing, Promotion & more marketing!
The Details
This is definitely sexy circus! But it's also way more than that. 'Devour' is a deviant, tongue-in-cheek dive, into the consequences of mistreating hospo and strip club workers.. who also happen to be werewolves. And when they get hangry, they get bloody hangry. It's fun, (did I mention sexy?!) but also takes the opportunity to unearth and shine a stage light on urban sub-culture and society's iniquities. The storyline is layered with lived experiences of the writer and cast, so it's authentic and has integrity. The werewolves? Inspired by the movies 'Eat the Rich' and 'A Company of Wolves', this is a fantasy fun revenge scenario and invites the audience to just imagine, if they got the chance to flip the tables and subvert the status quo. Being on stage is a privilege, we treat this platform with respect, and utilise the opportunity to entertain and provide food for thought.
The Impact
We are passionate about connecting audience to performance, making a show that is accessible to all levels of 'theatre-goer', so it's not intimidating, but speaks to everyone, and throughly entertains at the same time. My work, as Sugar High Productions, always strives for connection and authenticity, as well as sourcing and putting together on stage, the most incredible performing artists I can find. For this type of art to survive in this climate, it's now a collaborative effort. Theatre began as a way to communicate society's topics of the times, through comedy, satire and impressive skills. Without your support, life risks becoming a little less connected.
