The Project

Our school’s Shakespeare team has made it through to the SGCNZ National Shakespeare Festival in Wellington — happening 29 May to 2 June — with our dynamic and powerful 5-minute scene!

This is a HUGE milestone for us — the first time our school has ever made it this far in the competition! We’re beyond excited to represent our kura on the national stage and bring our scene to life in front of top theatre professionals and fellow performers from across Aotearoa.

But here’s the twist... this trip of a lifetime comes with a pretty big price tag. That’s why we’re reaching out for your support — every dollar will help us get to Wellington, cover travel costs, and make the most of this incredible opportunity.

If you can donate, you’ll be helping us not just make it there, but make it count.

Thank you so much in advance for your awhi and encouragement!
— Tanna, Ava, Gigi, Katarina, Sophia, and Maya

The Team

We’re a passionate group of Year 12 and 13 students who live and breathe theatre — especially the timeless magic of Shakespeare. Over time, we’ve fallen in love with the Bard’s brilliant storytelling and the way his words still pack a punch in today’s world. Bringing his work to life on stage is our jam, and we’re so proud to share his legacy through powerful performance.

The Funding

We are raising funds for:

- Flights

- Accomodation

- Workshops

- Food

- Other excursions during the trip

The Details

We’re performing a gripping and emotional scene from Othello, where Othello, consumed by jealousy and manipulation, kills Desdemona under the false belief that she has been unfaithful. It’s a heartbreaking moment — raw, intense, and deeply unsettling. The collapse of their marriage, built on love and trust, is both tragic and terrifying to witness.

What makes this scene hit even harder is its tragic relevance — sadly, the themes of control, mistrust, and violence against women are still all too real in our world today. That’s why this piece feels so powerful to perform — because it speaks across time, from Shakespeare’s day to our own.

We’ve approached this scene with a fresh perspective, adding dynamic, original elements that make our version stand out. We’ve poured our hearts into shaping something bold and unique, and we’re beyond excited to perform it on the iconic stage of St James Theatre in Wellington at the end of May.

The Impact

We believe the Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival is an incredible opportunity for teens and young people to connect with the creative history that has shaped so much of our modern world. It’s a chance to dive deep into powerful storytelling, explore timeless themes, and bring them to life through performance.

Our scene — Othello, Act 5, Scene 1 — is raw, moving, and emotionally charged. It’s a heartbreaking moment in the play, full of intensity, vulnerability, and devastating beauty. We’ve worked hard to bring out the depth and power in this performance, and we can’t wait to step onto the stage and share it with the world.
