Gisborne International Music Competition

2014 will be the 26th running of the Gisborne International Music Competition. Since 1989, Gisborne has been welcoming young musicians from all over Australasia and indeed, the rest of the world, to take part in this high calibre orchestral instrument competition. There is still no comparative competition for players of orchestral instruments in Australasia.

The competition was the brainchild of local music and sports retailer Ian Dunsmore as a positive event for the young people of Gisborne following the devastating 1988 Cyclone Bola. It would encourage them to hone their skills, compete with their peers and aspire to achieve the high calibre playing of expected of the judging panel.

Such is the respect with which the Competition is now held internationally that each year around half the competitor field is drawn from overseas, ensuring the standard of competition is as high as you could expect at any equivalent competition, anywhere in the world.

Past finalists of the Gisborne International Music Competition are now playing in leading professional orchestras and chamber groups and as soloists throughout New Zealand, Australia and the world.
