The film is also inspired by the Maori word ‘roto’ meaning 'lake'. The word roto also means 'within' and is used to refer to the space which is physically within another defined space. With ROTO we have explored the kaupapa (concept) of the lake within; the lake being a metaphor for our consciousness, and the surface of the lake being likened to our emotional state. ROTO was commissioned by the Festival of Colour and was funded by Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu.
