New Rattle Record releases include Laureate artists — 09.03.11

Three new, shortly to be released albums feature Laureate artists John Psathas and Richard Nunns

FLIGHT ON LIGHT is an extraordinarily passionate and moving album. Clarinetist Manos Achalinotopoulos is one of Greece's most emotive musicians. His music is grounded in folk traditions, but his performances transport the listener into profound and mystical realms. Manos' collaborators on this album are New Zealand musicians David Downes, John Psathas, Steve Garden and Tim Prebble.

John Psathas' HELIX is a truly 21st century album. Inspired by an eclectic range of musical interests, the album takes the listener on a millennia-leaping journey, from the sounds of the ancient Mediterranean, through the dance music of 18th century Italy, to the latest dubstep and drum'n'bass beats of 21st century South East London. Helix features stellar performances by the New Zealand String Quartet, NZTrio and Donald Nicolson. Both albums will be released on at the world premiere of his The New Zeibekiko at the Auckland Town Hall on Friday March 18. Manos will be performing, and both will be available to sign copies of their CDs.

At the end of March, Rattle will also release THE CURSE OF THE QUEEN'S DIAMOND.  Canadian-born composer/musician Dave Lisik moved to New Zealand in early 2010 to take up a position as Senior Lecturer in Jazz at the New Zealand School of Music. This is his first New Zealand release, and it's a very clear statement of intent. Featuring Richard Nunns (taonga puoro), Colin Hemmingsen (bass clarinet), Paul Dyne (acoustic bass) and Amy Remple (piano), this is an album for those who appreciate music at its most expressive and exploratory.
