Since 2015, we have taken 'Laureates On Stage', our most popular event, into Schools.

The Arts Foundation has been presenting Laureates On Stage for over 14 years. These popular events feature Laureate Award recipients in discussion with a facilitator. The artists also present or perform works and provide insights into their creations. These events are fascinating for those familiar with, or new to, the arts.

2016 was the second year that the Arts Foundation took Laureates On Stage into schools, with the help of CORE Education and Westpac. In 2015, students from Wellington College were visited by Laureate Anne Noble, Harriet Friedlander New York Residency recipient and Wellington College Old Boy, Arthur Meek and New Generation Award recipient, Sean James Donnelly (SJD). Anne Noble, Laureate Geoff Cochrane and New Generation artist, Dudley Benson paid Kings High School a visit, and Warren Maxwell joined Anne and Geoff at Cashmere High School.

In 2016, Wellington College, Cashmere High School, Christchurch, and King High School, Dunedin were paid a visit by Arts Foundation Laureates  Don McGlashan and Laurence Aberhart and New Generation Award recipient Jo Randerson.

Each Laureate ran a masterclass for five lucky students and with those students, created a work that was presented in front of a public audience later that evening. For music, theatre, film and photography students, it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to spend some precious time with artists who are at the top of their game. In addition to host schools, head of departments invited students and teachers from neighbouring schools to attend the afternoon workshop and rehearsals before the evening performance.

Arts Foundation Executive Director Simon Bowden says “Arts Foundation Laureates represent some of the greatest creative minds in New Zealand. Just chatting with a Laureate can be life changing."

Arts Foundation was proud to be work with CORE Education. Core Education supports teachers and artists to provide high level experiences for students. Core Education provided advice, support and connections and filmed the events for distribution to other high schools.
