Auckland Choral Society

Auckland Choral Society was founded in 1855 to nurture the practice of choral and orchestral music in a young, growing city. Now the largest choir in Auckland, it regularly performs symphonic choral masterpieces and premieres commissioned works, alongside national and international soloists, conductors and orchestras, in Auckland's great concert venues, under the direction of Music Director Professor Uwe Grodd.

The Todd Family selected Auckland Choral as recipient of one of four $10,000 donations made as part of the 2013 Arts Foundation Award for Patronage.

"Auckland Choral is unique in that it is probably the oldest arts organization in New Zealand - and it is still going strong. It has survived world wars and recessions, and performs the Messiah each year - continuously since 1855! This alone is testimony to the power and value of choral music to our community, and that it is part of our cultural heritage and identity. We are very grateful to the Todd Family for supporting us and recognizing our contribution."
- Professor Uwe Grodd, Music Director, Auckland Choral

Auckland Choral not only promotes choral music through live performances, in the Auckland Town Hall and at local community events, but also through its own young singers' programme and by supporting other initiatives like the New Zealand Choral Federation's BIG SING. The choir regularly sings the big symphonic choral works with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra - often together with other choirs such as the Brisbane Chorale, University of Auckland Chamber Choir and Dunedin City Choir.

In principle, Auckland Choral is an "auditioned community choir" that sings to a professional standard. Our members, wide-ranging in age, work intensively at rehearsals and are passionately committed to the music they sing. Bringing a unique blend of artistic excellence, professional polish and community spirit to their performances, they are proud to be part of a choir that continues to play such a significant role in Auckland's arts scene.
