Kolokesa Uafā Māhina-Tuai

Arts Liaison Co-Lead

What I bring to the Arts Foundation:

I bring to the Arts Foundation a love and passion for the work that I do with Barbara Makuati-Afitu under Lagi-Maama, a cultural organisation we co-founded in August 2018. We work across different spaces to navigate, champion and broker on behalf of, and with our communities, who are always at the heart of what we do. I have a background in Art History, Social Anthropology and Museums and Heritage Studies. My foundation of Tongan Indigenous knowledge and practices, informs my holistic understanding and appreciation of Moana Oceania arts and artists, through my curatorial practice, arts advocacy and activism, and writing projects. And in working on cross-cultural projects, independently and under Lagi-Maama, has provided the time and space to think critically about how to genuinely and inclusively make Aotearoa New Zealand the diverse nation it claims to be. A meaningful engagement through the arts is an exciting place to start the conversation.

Art is:

Enriching and unique when we define it from the different worldviews of the diverse communities that make up Aotearoa New Zealand.

Why people should contact me:

People should contact me because Barbara Makuati-Afitu and I are here to navigate, broker and champion your ‘voices’ on your behalf.
