ALICE by Dame Gillian Whitehead — 16.12.13

Atoll CD has released “Alice” – a recording of the music of Dame Gillian Whitehead, featuring mezzo soprano Helen Medlyn, harpist Carolyn Mills and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

Alice was first performed in 2002 and was later recorded in 2012 by Medlyn and the NZSO.  It is the moving story of a woman’s fight for a new life in colonial New Zealand. Fleur Adcock’s text with music by Gillian Whitehead is already recognised as a New Zealand musical masterpiece.

William Dart's Verdict: "A Kiwi masterpiece that, at last, you can take home with you, in the best orchestral company."
