ARTSPACE

ARTSPACE is a contemporary art gallery that was established in Auckland in 1987.  The gallery commissions and exhibits contemporary art from New Zealand and international artists.  ARTSPACE plays an important role in nurturing emergent art in New Zealand and runs a project based programme. ARTSPACE provides a vital space for artists and their work.   It represents the exchange of ideas and the value of risk taking.  It is run as a charitable public trust governed by a Board of Trustees.

ARTSPACE received a donation from the Arts Foundation through 2007 Arts Foundation Award for Patronage recipient, Dame Jenny Gibbs.

ARTSPACE building, Karangahape Road, Auckland

In conjunction with exhibitions of artist's works, ARTSPACE promotes research and education programmes, such as their Curatorial Intern programme and Saturday Talk series.   ARTSPACE has a public Reading Room, to be used for research, which holds its own publications as well as numerous other local and international contemporary art publications.

The exhibition programme at ARTSPACE is selected by the Director.  ARTSPACE is unique in that the Director of the gallery may only be employed for a period of three years.   This restriction ensures that a fresh eye is always being applied to the work that is shown and the exhibition programme is influenced by the wealth of experience that each Director brings.

"ARTSPACE is New Zealand's most important contemporary art institution, with a reputation as a creative and experimental laboratory. ARTSPACE operates as an articulate and passionate advocate for artists; we put artists and their work at the centre of everything we do."
- Emma Bugden, Director of ARTSPACE

Eve Armstrong, Adaptives ARTSPACE Billboard

"Publish with a spine" is the philosophy behind the production of the large number of publications that ARTSPACE has produced in conjunction with its exhibitions.  Among these books are the Volume series (featuring Eve Armstrong), Andrew McLeod's Largess, John Reynolds' Sumwhr and numerous monographs and catalogues to accompany solo and group exhibitions.  The quality of the writing that is produced for ARTSPACE publications is of a high academic standard and provides insights into an artist's work above and beyond the content of a given exhibition.

ARTSPACE is located at Level 1, 300 Karangahape Road, Newton, Auckland.

Open Tuesday - Friday 10am - 6pm, Saturday 11am - 4pm.
