KYOTO for 5 percussionists by John Psathas

2011

The Ju Percussion Group, who commissioned the work, performed KYOTO as part of the opening concert. A trienniel festival since 1992, the 2011 TIPC features 26 concerts by thirteen groups from ten different countries. John Psathas attended the festival as guest composer.

The work title refers to the recording of an improvisation by pianist Keith Jarret that took place in Kyoto on November 5th, 1976. Acknowledging the influence of this recording, Psathas says, 'This improvisation of Jarrett's is, more than anything, the piece that woke the composer in me, and set me on this journey of creating my own music for others.
